Hello! I'm Jorie

I am Jorie Edwards a graduating senior majoring in Biology with a concentration in Microbiology. I chose biology because it’s never ending. There will never be a stopping point where there’s nothing more to learn like a text book. Biology is life long and there’s always something new and old things change while new things are being discovered. You will never go a day without a seeing some sort of biology because it is all around us. I am happy to become a biologist to help create and event these new ideas to have a better and healthier quality of life.

EDUCATION
East Carolina University

In High school there was a program set up for students who excelled in their current and past courses called ECU’s Second life. It was an online virtual classroom with avatars to give the students a more realistic approach to learning. It was made available to the top 10% of my class only allowing 12 people in the program. Senior year of high school I took high and four college courses. ECU is so close to my home town it was convenient and one of the best choices I’ve made.

My first day as a  Teachers assistant for the department was very exciting and nerve wrecking at the same time. I was assigned a class that best suited my schedule so I would be able to sit in on the lectures and labs. My very first class was filled with 200 freshmen and a few upperclassman. I was very confident because I had a strategy that I had planned to use. Luckily that strategy worked, I spoke with student in and outside of the class room. If they needed me for academics or just someone to talk to I made sure that I tried my best to assistant them in any way that I could. Being a TA this year has taught me a lot about myself and the goals that I desire to reach. These students have taught me to relax, and to understand that everything takes patience and being a TA took lots of it. Learning to cater to everyone teaching style is what set me apart from my peers who were also TA’s. My students understood the importance of me conducting their recitations. My motto was “Less texting, more learning, phones up and eyes on me.” I wanted to engage my students and being that we weren’t so far apart in age it made easier to communicate with them scientifically and break the barriers.
